Kakamega School was established in 1932. It was earlier known as Government African School Kakamega and Kakamega High School. It is located in Kakamega, Western Kenya.

Prior to its completion and inauguration, In August 1931, Mr. Harold Arthur Waterloo Chapman, a University of Oxford graduate, was chosen to lead the school. He remained the school’s principal until his retirement in 1955. He passed away on January 25, 1988.

In Kakamega School, where his name became synonymous with the institution, Chapman left a lasting impression. In the school hymn, Chapman’s Land is a term that is still used to describe the institution.

Currently classified as a national school by the Ministry of Education, Kakamega School accepts students from all around Kenya. But even before it was made a national school, because of its reputation, it would draw students from all across the nation.

The Green Commandos, a football team from Kakamega High School, won the national soccer championship in 2018 under the KSSSA program as well as East Africa and national championships for Rugby 15s in 2019.

According to Kenyan national education regulations, the school accepts around 300 students annually based on academic performance and quota. According to the existing educational policy, there is a bias in favor of pupils from public schools. In addition, admission is based only on merit, not a necessity.

Kakamega High School KCSE Performance;

It is a regional academic powerhouse. According to the KCSE 2022–January 2023 findings, the school’s present mean score is 8.228. This is a modest increase over the 8.2 positive deviations from the KCSE 2021–April 2022 results. The school achieved positions 141 in the KCSE 2022, 77 in the KCSE 2021, and 73 in the KCSE 2020, allowing it to enter the top 100.

The school demonstrated its value by turning out top KCSE candidates with outstanding marks, enabling it to rank among the top 200 schools nationwide and among the 100 best-performing and highest-ranking schools in Kakamega County.
